The Internet is buzzing after Rooney's stunning bicycle kick goal helped lead Manchester United to a 2-1 win over Premier League rival Manchester City at Old Trafford.

In the 77th minute, Rooney - who had scored only five times all season for United - took to the air and delivered Nani's right-wing cross into the top corner of the net as City keeper Joe Hart watched helplessly from his spot.

"I saw it coming over and I thought why not? Nine times out of 10 they go into the stand," Rooney told Sky Sports.

Goal of the year? His coach says think bigger. Alex Ferguson called it the greatest strike he's seen in 25 years at Old Trafford.

"We've had some fantastic goals here but in terms of execution ... you'll never see that."

Rooney's teammate Rio Ferdinand - who was on the sidelines with an injury - offered up his reaction on Twitter.

Google's telephony management application Google Voice is now open to all U.S. residents, as the company on Tuesday removed the requirement for prospective users to receive an invitation in order to sign up for the service.

Already, there are 1 million people with Google Voice accounts. Service features include a single phone number that, when called, rings a person's multiple lines, such as their home, office and cellular phone. Google Voice also offers voicemail message transcription, free calls to the U.S. and Canada, low international calling rates, conference call capability and a central, Web-based voicemail inbox. A subset of Google Voice features can also be used by people who don't want to get the single Google "phone number for life," but rather use one of their existing lines.

3 million iPads Sells Apple in first 80 days

Apple Inc. has sold more than 3 million iPads just 80 days after the tablet computer's launch in the United States.

The touch-screen iPad blew past analysts' expectations even in its first month when it sold 1 million, and Monday's 3-million mark signaled that it was not losing any steam.

"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in a statement. "We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."

The news came as the prices of iPad's e-reader competitors — Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle and Barnes & Noble Inc.'s Nook — were slashed Monday to under $200. The iPad starts at $499.

But it seems price isn't an issue when it comes to some of the hottest, and coolest, pieces of technology on the market, said Richard Doherty, analyst at Envisioneering Group.

Apple's IOS 4 Folders: Usable, but Poorly Implemented - By pcworld

Apple's iOS 4 upgrade for the iPhone and iPod touch. The new multitasking and Mail features alone are great, but I was especially eager to get my fingers on the new folders feature.

Folders are essentially collections of apps. That concept appeals greatly to people (like me) with screenful-upon-screenful of apps; by grouping similar apps together, you can clean up your many home screens and spend less time swiping. But there are two elements to iOS 4 folders that are--to use the technical term--really, really annoying.

Annoyance #1

iOS folders can only hold 12 items. That's dopey.
Ignoring the four permanently docked apps at the bottom of each Home screen, you can store 16 apps per page on your iPhone. I imagine I'm not the only person on the planet who, prior to the launch of the new folders feature, organized his apps by screen. My first Home screen was devoted to the apps I use the most often, a few others to my favorite games, and one screen to apps for my kids.

The common factor on each of those organized screens? They all included 16 apps. Apple's design decision to limit folders to 12 apps requires that I reorganize my apps a lot--which isn't just unpleasant, it's unnecessary. Look at the "full" folder pictured to the right.

Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Namely, that nearly 80-pixel-tall region at the bottom of my screen where all you can see is my cobblestone wallpaper? You know what would fit just perfectly there?

Four more apps, that's what. I'm thinking that Apple feared putting any "non-dock" and non-fast-app-switching apps along that bottom row might confuse folks, but I disagree with that hypothetical decision I just invented. As is, even if you're not a former adherent of the "organizing by screenful" mentality, this folder layout involves a bizarre use of wasted space.

5 Turkish Killed in Attack on Turkish Military Bus

In the latest of a series of attacks on the Turkish military, a remote-controlled bomb killed 5 people and wounded 15 on a busy highway in Istanbul early Tuesday, the governor’s office announced.

While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Turkish news reports suggested that the attack might have been carried out by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, an armed separatist group seeking autonomy in southeastern Turkey that the authorities here, along with the United States and the European Union, consider a terrorist organization. The group has been fighting the Turkish state since the 1980s, and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

“As Istanbul people, we will hold firm against terror that aims to create an air of anxiety and hopelessness,” Huseyin Avni Mutlu, the Istanbul governor, said. “We will do everything in our capacity to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.”

According to witnesses and police investigators, the explosion took place during the morning rush hour in the city’s Halkali district, as a military shuttle bus traveled between a residential compound and offices that include the military police headquarters.

Teen girls' drinking may lead to breast problems later

Frequent alcohol consumption by teenage girls may increase the chances that they will develop non-cancerous breast disease in their 20s and possibly breast cancer later in life.

Research published online April 12 in the journal Pediatrics found that girls who drank the most alcohol during their teen years — daily or nearly every day — were five times more likely to develop benign breast disease as young adults than were their peers who never drank or drank less than once a week.

Benign breast disease (BBD) includes a number of nonmalignant conditions. Fibroadenoma, a noncancerous tumor, is the most common in those aged 30 and younger. Study co-author Catherine Berkey, a biostatistician at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said that benign breast disease is known to boost the risk for breast cancer.

So does that mean that teens who drink alcohol are increasing their breast cancer risk early in life?

"Our study may suggest that teen drinking increases the risk for breast cancer, whether in all females or in those who go on to develop BBD, but longer-term follow-up is certainly required" to confirm it, she said.

A unique aspect of Berkey's study was that the girls assessed their drinking habits while they were teenagers. Other studies have based their conclusions on adult women's recalling their teenage drinking many years later.

"Our new study is the first in which alcohol data were collected during adolescence, with continued follow-up in the females as they develop disease," she said.

The study involved 6,899 women who had become participants in the "Growing Up Today Study" when they were 9 to 15 years old. Information on alcoholic beverage consumption was collected in a follow-up survey when the participants were 16 to 23 years old, and a survey done when they were 18 to 27 years old included questions on breast disease.

In all, 147 participants reported having benign breast disease, with 67 cases having been confirmed by biopsy.

When Berkey and her colleagues looked at the diagnoses of benign breast disease and drinking, they found that risk for benign breast disease rose along with the frequency of alcohol consumption: from a 1.5 increased risk for drinking one or two days per week, to a three times greater risk for those drinking three to five days per week, and to a 5.5 times greater risk for drinking six or seven days per week, when compared with those who never drank or who drank less than once per week.

Even once-a-week drinkers may not be absolutely safe, Berkey noted. "I suspect there may be some small additional BBD risk for even small amounts of alcohol consumed during adolescence," she said.

Teen years are a critical time for potential cancer-producing exposures, she said, because the mammary glands are undergoing rapid growth during that period.

Berkey said she suspects the link is due to alcohol increasing total estrogen levels, raising the likelihood of benign breast disease.

"For me, this is not a surprise," said Dr. Patricia Ganz, director of cancer prevention and control research at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Regular alcohol consumption is known to increase a woman's risk for both breast cancer and benign breast disease, she said, and "certain forms of BBD increase the risk of breast cancer."

And though she described the new study as excellent, she cautioned that the sample size was relatively small.

"I wouldn't scare (teens) and say, 'You are going to get breast cancer if you drink,'" Ganz said. But, on the other hand, she added: "The public health message is, these young girls shouldn't be drinking anyway."

Apple Asks Pulitzer Prize-Winning Cartoonist to Resubmit App

Apple asked Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Mark Fiore to resubmit an iPhone app of his political cartoons, after previously rejecting "Newstoons" for its satirical take on public figures such as President Obama and Tea Party members. Fiore, who is considering whether to resubmit the app, apparently feels that his Pulitzer Prize has accorded him preferential treatment in the matter. As the App Store expands rapidly with new products from developers, Apple has been increasingly stringent about weeding out what it views as objectionable content.

Apple has apparently asked a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist to resubmit an iPhone app previously rejected because of its satirical nature. Mark Fiore’s animations, which are featured on SFGate.com and lampoon public figures such as President Obama, reality TV stars and Wall Street titans, were previously deemed objectionable by Apple’s app review committee.

According to an e-mail to Fiore by Apple Dec. 21, and reprinted by the Nieman Journalism Lab, the NewsToons app’s collection of political cartoons violated iPhone Developer Program License Agreement Section 3.3.14, which stipulates that "applications may be rejected if they contain content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, sounds, etc.) that in Apple’s reasonable judgment may be found objectionable."

With that e-mail, Apple apparently included screenshots of the relevant "objectionable" content, such as a cartoon in which Obama on the podium is interrupted by Afghan president Hamid Karzai, the White House gate crashers, and a group of budget protesters. The Nieman Journalism Lab goes on to point out that "Fiore isn’t the first editorial cartoonist to clash with Apple" and that a 2009 app "which used political caricatures by Tom Richmond" was also rejected before protests led to its eventual admittance.

"I feel kind of guilty," Fiore told the Wall Street Journal April 16. "I’m getting preferential treatment because I got the Pulitzer."

Fiore suggested in that interview that he would probably resubmit the app for Apple’s review. "I’m a sucker for Apple," Fiore told the newspaper, "and I do like what they’ve done. I’ve always felt like they would be the type to support political cartooning."

As the App Store has increased in size and popularity, with research firm IDC predicting some 300,000 apps by the end of 2010, Apple has become more stringent about weeding what it perceives as objectionable apps from the online storefront’s lineup. In a Feb. 22 article in The New York Times, Apple head of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller said that "an increasing number of apps containing questionable content" had been pulled from the App Store.

In addition to pulling apps found objectionable by its review board, Apple has also begun taking down programs by developers who allegedly posted fake reviews, such as its December removal of 1,000 applications by Molinker. Apple’s stringency may increase as it prepares iPhone 3.0 OS, which will be released this summer and includes a variety of all-new features, including the long-awaited ability to multitask.

But some of Apple’s app removals have attracted their share of controversy, with third-party developers asking why their products were removed from the App Store while others with similar content were allowed to remain. In Fiore’s case, the answer may well have to do with a certain prize.

Space Shuttle Discovery Heads to Earth, to Land April 19

The space shuttle Discovery undocked from the International Space Station this morning and began heading back to Earth. It’s scheduled to land on April 19.

The shuttle will begin its descent into Earth’s atmosphere at 7:43 a.m. New York time on Monday, with a scheduled landing at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 8:21 a.m., NASA said in a statement.

Discovery took off April 5 with six astronauts aboard for a 14-day mission. They delivered a logistics module filled with equipment to be used for science experiments aboard the space station.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has planned three more shuttle flights before the program, which started in 1981, is shut down. Atlantis is slated to take off on its last journey on May 14; Endeavour is set for its final launch on July 29; and Discovery is to make its last trip in September.

In February, President Barack Obama announced a plan to end NASA’s Constellation program to develop rockets and vessels for a return to the moon and instead focus on technology development and spurring private efforts to build spacecraft.

Mozilla's latest efforts in the area have just been finalized: a new stable version of Firefox that not only provides more control features to the new Windows 7 taskbar, but lets you paste posters on its wall.

Firefox 3.6 RTM called Personas, and it addresses one of the few features gaps between Firefox and Google Chrome -- a browser that, besides being the fastest stable Windows Web browser in the field, is relatively bare-bones compared to Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Bringing back one of the more popular features attached to Netscape Navigator back in the '90s, Firefox 3.6 offers users a way to paste an image in the background of
the browser frame.

In building up for this release, Mozilla gathered several thousand candidate images in a new gallery. And this afternoon, Betanews noticed that the organization was tweaking its download service so that new downloaders (you, for example, when you visit Fileforum to download 3.6 for yourself) will be steered toward this gallery.

Most impressively of all, you can see how a persona might look on your own browser simply by rolling over its thumbnail in the gallery. This is important because with Firefox, not all components appear in exactly the same place, due to exactly the trend that the Personas feature encourages: customization. You might like a persona with your favorite pop star in the upper right corner, for instance, but the way your components are arranged now, a search box could cut right through her face.

While the Personas feature could pay off big for version 3.6, it may actually present a problem for developers working on 3.7 and the future Firefox 4.0. Both of those versions are expected to introduce progressively more streamlined window frames, enabling minimalism on a par with Google Chrome. Narrower space could mean less surface area to deploy Personas and other customizations -- a real estate problem that Mozilla contributors will now have to face head-on.

Mozilla typically enables the download link for the final stable version of its products as much as a day before it makes its official announcement to the public. This time the organization broke with tradition, however, by issuing its announcement just one hour after its public download links were established. With version 3.5, Mozilla's engineers began building in support for browser-based HTML5 video -- a way to play back streaming movies without downloading anyone else's codecs as an attachment. Not Real's, not Adobe's, not Apple's. Version 3.6 expands that support by enabling HTML5 videos to be taken full-screen.

It could be the Year of the iPhone in China, as Apple officially started selling its iconic smartphone in the world's largest mobile market Friday night.

While China saw nothing near the frenzy of the first iPhone launch day here in the U.S., crowds there did honor the tradition of lining up for the phone many hours in advance at several locations. A few hundred people queued up in the rain and cold outside The Place shopping center in Beijing, for example. There, Zhi Xianzhong became the first person to get the iPhone from Apple partner China Unicom after waiting 7 hours and 40 minutes, according to China Daily.

As expected, China Unicom, the country's second largest telecom operator after China Mobile, is selling two versions of the iPhone in China under a three-year deal with Apple. But cost could prove to be a deterrent. Prices range from 4,999 yuan (about $732) for the 8GB 3G model to 6,999 yuan (about $1,025) for the 32GB 3GS phone (sans contract).

Consumers can get cheaper, cracked, gray-market iPhone models at local electronics stores or bring them in from other markets. But price isn't the only potential obstacle here. In accordance with Chinese government regulations, the handsets also lack a key feature--Wi-Fi capability, though reports say China Unicom hopes to offer Wi-Fi-enabled iPhones within a few months.

Nearly one-third, or 28 percent, of adults and children hospitalized with H1N1, also known as swine flu, have asthma. That's more than any other chronic condition, according to a recent analysis of cases published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
(The next most common complications on the list were diabetes and a weakened immune system, at 15 percent each.)

"Asthma was the most common underlying medical condition that we saw," says Seema Jain, M.D., a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jain's team analyzed 272 people who were hospitalized with swine flu for more than 24 hours between April and June.

The H1N1 flu pandemic has continued its march across Minnesota., with a sharp increase of hospitalizations and school outbreaks last week.

A total of 915 Minnesotans have been hospitalized with H1N1 complications since spring, including 225 last week, the Health
Department reported. And two additional Minnesotans died, bringing the total number of deaths to 12. Meanwhile, 288 schools reported outbreaks last week, compared with 230 the previous week.

Despite long lines and limited supplies of the H1N1 flu vaccine, U.S. efforts against the disease are not too late, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said on Monday.

Sebelius acknowledged frustrating waits to get the vaccine, but said some 16.5 million doses are now being made available, with efforts to get more.

"I never like to see people inconvenienced," Sebelius said on ABC's "Good Morning America. "If we had found the virus a little earlier, we could have started a little earlier."

Asked whether this effort might be too late in light of one estimate that the H1N1 flu virus will peak by October 31, Sebelius said, "I don't think it's too late ... What we saw in 1950s (flu pandemic) was that there was a big outbreak in fall and then a new wave in the spring."

With a future wave of H1N1 possible, vaccination is still useful, Sebelius said.She acknowledged that four out of five sources of the vaccine are outside the United States, but said an additional U.S. plant will be making the vaccine in 2010.

"Certainly it's a concern that we rely on other nations to purchase the vaccine," Sebelius said.

In response to a question about whether the United States should have taken more aggressive measures earlier, Sebelius told NBC's "Today" program that it was unclear early on just how deadly this virus would be.

She noted that 1,000 people have died from this disease in the United States but added, "This is not presenting in most people to be a seriously lethal disease."

Anne Schuchat of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, speaking on CNN, advised healthy adults over 25 and senior citizens to wait and allow more vulnerable patients -- children, young adults, healthcare workers, pregnant women, adults with chronic conditions and parents and others who take care of infants -- to receive the vaccine first.

Acting on the recommendation of flu experts, the WHO reiterated its advice to its 193 member countries not to close borders or impose travel restrictions to halt the movement of people, goods and services. The move to phase 6 reflects the fact that the disease, widely known as swine flu, was spreading geographically, but does not indicate how virulent it is.

A unanimous experts' decision was based on an overall assessment in the eight most heavily hit countries -- Australia, Britain, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the United States -- that the virus is spreading in a sustained way in communities, according to Chan.

"Collectively, looking at that, we are satisfied that this virus is spreading to a number of a countries and it is not stoppable," Dr. Margaret Chan said. "Moving to pandemic phase six level does not imply we will see an increase in the number of deaths or very severe cases. "Quite on the contrary. Mexico's Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova on Thursday evening said there are early signs of a decline in suspected new cases of a deadly influenza virus that has claimed 12 lives.

Speaking at a press conference, Cordova said that a week after announcing a health emergency in order to contain the virus, there has been a decline in the number of suspected cases handled by the hospital system of the Mexican Social Security Institute.

"Social Security received 212 probable cases April 20. Today there were only 46. There has been a progressive decline in these cases," he said. But the minister also cautioned that despite these latest figures giving reason for "some hope" it was still too early to declare whether the spread of the virus has started to slow.

Cordova said that the number of confirmed cases of people in Mexico who have contracted the new strain of influenza A has risen to 312 from the last reported number of 260, including the 12 confirmed deaths. That was out of 679 suspected cases tested by laboratories so far.

He said that of the confirmed fatalities, seven were in the capital area, four in neighboring Mexico State, and one from southern Oaxaca State. They included four males, eight females and virtually were from all age groups.

Cordova also said that to date health authorities have visited the homes of 77 people among a group of 176 influenza-related deaths to inspect the state of health of the relatives of the dead and provide support.

Mexico will open five more laboratories - it only has one now - in coming days to test for the virus. The six labs together will be able to process around 500 samples a day. Prior to Mexico starting in-country testing Tuesday, samples were tested in the U.S. and Canada.

"We are going to continue to process all of the samples we have and it's likely that the number of confirmed deaths (from the virus) is going to rise," he said.

Joe Biden went on a morning talk show and, almost as if he hadn't gotten talking points, veered off the team's message about how to avoid swine flu.

Biden said he was telling his family members to avoid confined spaces such as airplanes and subway trains. The trouble is, the administration is trying to tamp down alarm over the flu with a message about skipping only unnecessary travel to Mexico and simply staying home when feeling sick.

"It's not that it's going to Mexico. It's you're in a confined aircraft; when one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft," the vice president said on the NBC's "Today" show.

"I would not be, at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway," he continued ". . . . If you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes, that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft, or closed container or closed car or closed classroom, it's a different thing," he said.

The U.S. travel industry was quick to complain about the comments, and the White House scrambled to respond. It first issued a statement repackaging the vice president's words, and then finally offered a shrug and an apology.

"I think the vice president misrepresented what the vice president wanted to say," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

"The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: That they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico," said Elizabeth Alexander, the vice president's spokeswoman, rewriting Biden's comments a bit.

Five U.S. soldiers Killed In Iraq

The U.S. military said that five U.S. soldiers were killed Friday in a suicide bombing in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Mosul is the provincial capital of Nineveh and is about 260 miles, or 420 kilometers, north of Baghdad.

A suicide truck bomber breached the outer security barrier of Iraqi National Police headquarters in southern Mosul, and detonated his explosives, killing eight people and wounding 60 others, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said. A U.S. soldier was also among the wounded, the U.S. military said.

U.S. and Iraqi military forces plan to pull out of Mosul to allow Iraqi police to control security in the city. But police are not quite ready yet, according to an Iraqi general.

"We need to bring the police to the required level. The deadline is the end of July, and it's not enough time to prepare the police," said Gen. Hassan Karim, commander of Nineveh operations for the Iraqi army. "(That) means we'll need U.S. forces to stay in Mosul."

In a cable to U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, Clinton says the success of President Barack Obama's plan depends on the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, whose ranks in Afghanistan and Pakistan are in line for boosts.
"Whether this strategy succeeds or not depends in large part on all of us," she said in the cable to employees of the two agencies late Friday after Obama announced the results of his administration's review of policy for the region.

The plan does have a significant military component and calls for sending thousands of
additional troops to Afghanistan. But Clinton noted that the most recommendations fall under the purview of the State Department and the aid agency.

Clinton leaves Monday for the Netherlands where she said she will seek foreign support for the program at an international conference on Afghanistan.

But the U.S. part of the strategy aimed at defeating al-Qaida, the Taliban and other extremists will see hundreds more diplomats and aid workers deployed in Afghanistan and provide $1.5 billion in annual development aid to Pakistan.

The White House has not released an estimate of the total cost. It is expected to run into the billions of dollars just on State Department and foreign assistance programs.

Fargo in flood threat due to Cold weather

Hundreds of National Guard troops, local residents and volunteers continued to reinforce and raise sandbagged barriers and floodwalls. They had been bracing for a record crest on Saturday but awoke instead to a slightly lower water level.

Cold weather froze flood waters in the fields around this metropolitan area of 175,000 people, keeping spring melt from adding to the flooded river, said Mike Hudson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fargo.

The Red River Valley is an important farming region for spring wheat and sugar beets, though spring planting is still weeks away. Wet soil could delay some seeding, which for wheat and corn can go well into May. U.S. wheat prices fell on Friday as snowstorms in the Plains aided needed soil moisture.
The river's level has continued to drop since midnight (0500 GMT) and was 40.68 feet (12.41 m)at 11:15 a.m. CDT on Saturday, down from 40.82 feet (12.44 m). The temperature was 17 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8 Celsius) just before 11 a.m.

The river had been forecast to crest on Saturday at 42 feet before freezing temperatures caused the weather service to revise its forecast. The river should stay at its current level or drop over the next three to four days, the NWS said.

President Barack Obama on Saturday expressed support for flooded residents and praised volunteers. Earlier, Obama had issued disaster declarations for North Dakota and Minnesota.

Apple has introduced a new iPhone features. The new features included in the update replicate those already offered by other smartphones.The new functions of theApple's iphone include cut, copy and paste, long demanded by iPhone users, picture messaging and an in-phone search feature, but not Flash video.

"The upgrade is a big big deal and will help persuade consumers to stay with Apple," said Gartner analyst Van Baker.

Apple's Scott Forstall demonstrates the iPhone's cut and paste feature "While things like copy and paste and multi-media messaging (MMS) are things they have needed to do for a while, other features will in essence stop consumers buying other smartphones and raise the amount of money people spend on the iPhone, " he said.
Analyst Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray agreed that the upgrade was a major step forward."We believe Apple addressed key issues that were leading some consumers to competing devices for multimedia messaging and enterprise e-mail."

Apple also highlighted some of the other main features for consumers included a voice memo and stereo Bluetooth.A new search tool called Spotlight will allow users to search files and applications on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
